Student loans should be considered as the last loan option

Student loans give people the opportunity to attend colleges, as they supply the money needed for tuition payments. In some cases though, unrealistic assessment of the starting salaries and other expenses upon graduation can lead to an incapacity of actually repaying the loan.

A large number of college graduates find themselves trapped in the debts of their student loan in the first 10-15 years after graduation. This sad situation has many reasons, and the main one is lack of information. Firstly, anyone thinking of getting a student loan needs to comprehend the fact that a college degree does not necessarily mean a high starting salary, not does it imply having humongous job offers. In reality, finding a job takes quite a lot of time (from 6 months up to one year), and usually the salary is far lower than the anticipated.

This happens in part due to the Universities which in order to validate their high tuitions, publish starting salaries only of those who have received great offers in the field of  study immediately after graduation.  These students usually have prior work experience in their study field, such as internships.  Most students though do not get such opportunities and are confronted with difficulties in getting employment. Also, considering that education can provide the necessary experience required for most jobs is a common mistake among graduates. No matter the reason, most starting salaries are much lower than expected.

For some, getting a student loan might make the difference between getting a college education or not. In these cases there is no other option. During their entire lifespan, this loan will repay itself, and in the case in which they are careful about making their payments on time and get consolidation loans, they will not encounter many difficulties.

Student loans have proved to be the perfect option for those who have no other means of supporting themselves through college, yet in the case of those who do not have an absolute need for them they are an unnecessary complication at the moment of graduation. It is a loan issued for education only and should be used when other means of funding are unavailable.

Before taking a student loan it is advisable to explore every other available resource such as grants, scholarships or work-study programs in no order to be sure that there is no other more efficient way of funding your studies.
